Raj Ghat: Mahatma Gandhi's Memorial

A haven of peace amidst the noise of Delhi, this is how I would describe the Raj Ghat, the resting place of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes, also known as "the Father of the Nation".

History of the Raj Ghat

The Raj Ghat, literally means "royal courtyard" and it is the memorial in honor of the leader Mahatma Gandhi. It is about a simple black marble slab located in the exact place where the father of the nation was cremated. on January 31, 1948, just one day after his assassination.

The Gandhi Memorial is in an open space surrounded by gardens of sober and simple style. It is arranged with the symbol of the eternal flame and a priest is in charge that this flame is never extinguished. The memorial has an epitaph with the last words pronounced by the Mahatma: "Hey Ram" which in English translates as "Oh Lord". After his cremation, the ashes were scattered in the Ganges River, but given his social importance, a part of the ashes were reserved and deposited in the marble building, that is to say his mausoleum.

The Raj Ghat complex also houses the Gandhi Memorial Museum and the cremation places of other leaders or important figures of Indian society such as Jawaharlal Nehru or Indira Gandhi.

A simple memorial that represents the essence and purest philosophy of the father of the Nation.
